Keep Your Eyes Healthy
What is Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism?
The human eye is the organ of light perception that endows the faculty of vision.
Various diseases, defects and factors affect the eyes. These include infectious diseases, congenital defects, injury, aging and stress.
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and defects of the eye. Thus, eye care revolves around
- Control and cure of infectious diseases
- Medical correction of the defects and injuries
- Monitoring age and stress related afflictions and
- Maintaining healthy eyes
Control and Cure of Infectious Diseases:
The eyes are prone to bacterial, viral and fungal infections. These infections can be easily detected by specific symptoms such as redness, itching, blurred vision, watery discharge, pain and swelling of the eye parts. Common eye infections include conjunctivitis, stye, blepharitis, cellulitis, keratitis, corneal ulcer, trachoma, herpes simplex virus and herpes zoster infections. These infections can be treated by prompt and appropriate medical care.
Medical Correction of the Defects and Injuries:
Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism are the common congenital eye defects. Myopia, also referred to as nearsightedness, is a defect, where, far objects appear blurred and near objects appear clear. Hyperopia, referred to as farsightedness, is a defect, where, near objects appear blurred and far objects appear clear. Astigmatism is a focal defect of the retina. All these defects can be corrected with optometric and surgical interventions. Injuries can cause serious eye defects including loss of vision. Injuries are caused by sharp physical objects and chemicals that cause tissue damage. Such injuries warrant immediate medical attention.
Monitoring Age and Stress Related Afflictions:
Human eyes are prone to age and stress related afflictions. Cataract, Glaucoma and AMRD are common age related afflictions. Cataract is caused by the degeneration of cells in the tissues surrounding the lens part of the eye. Glaucoma is a condition caused by excess intraocular pressure in the eye and this excess pressure damages the optic nerves. AMRD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) is a retinal defect caused due to hardening of arteries that supply blood to the retina. Computer professionals, craftsmen, diamond cutters, automobile drivers and microbiologists are prone to occupational eye stress. Periodic eye check and appropriate interventions prevent such age and stress related afflictions.
Maintaining Healthy Eyes:
I recommend regular dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins like Vitamin A, E and C that prevent degeneration of the optic tissues. Selenium and Zinc are excellent mineral supplements for vision care. Prevention of excess eye strain can guard you against stress related eye afflictions.Computer Related Health Issues
