I am rather surprised to find Diabetes mellitus as the most dreaded disease not only in the United States, but across the entire globe. I am dumbstruck when I go through the statistical data that declares over eighteen million Americans diabetic.

Diabetes is a condition that results in deleteriously high levels of glucose in the blood. This occurs when sugar metabolism of the human body is affected due to failure in the production or utilization of an important hormone called insulin. Diabetes, if undetected, can lead to serious illness like heart attack, blindness, kidney failure and gangrene.

Technically, diabetes is classified as Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes. Type 1 results on account of damage to the insulin producing cells in the pancreas and abnormal secretion of thyroid hormone or adrenaline which alter normal insulin production.

Type 2 is common in the middle aged population, obese individuals and population under severe stress. In such patients, the body loses its ability to produce enough insulin and utilize the insulin produced. Gestational diabetes is the form diabetes that is detected in pregnant women for the first time.

I am obliged to mention modern day stress as a major factor that leads to diabetes. Supersonic life style, conditioned by severe competition for survival sandwiched between scanty time and dwindling resources pushes everyone today into the dirty pond of stress.

Though every biological being is endowed with stress busting capabilities, chronic stress leads to distress and diseases subsequently. Pre-diabetic phase is a condition where the individual’s glucose level is higher than the normal range but not sufficient enough to be defined diabetic. Research studies have shown that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented with the detection and initiation of diabetes self-care in the pre-diabetes phase.

Self-care strategies include lifestyle programs that are based on a low calorie fat free diet and activity filled life style. An activity filled stress free life style activates various other sugar regulating mechanisms like lactate dehydrogenase in the muscles that can utilize pyruvic acid, the end product of a sugar molecular breakdown.

Such a life style eases the load on the major sugar controlling mechanism and helps sugar regulation. In case of diabetes, prevention is much better than cure.
